  • 11th Annual UPS/United Way Tug-A-Plane

    General Information:

    -Admission is free and open to the public.
    -Teams consist of 20 people (with at least 5 females per team) from local businesses and organizations.
    -The plane is a UPS-A300.
    -2007 Defending Champion:  BlueCross BlueShield with a tug time of 11.50 seconds!
    -Teams compete to pull the plane 25 feet across a runway as quickly as possible.  The team with the lowest tug time wins!
    -Because of committed companies like these, this event has raised over $160,000 for United Way of the Midlands. 

    There is plenty of family fun, food, & games for the children:
    -"Kiddie" Tug - kids line up to pull a small Cesna aircraft - just for fun!
    -Giant slides, a moon walk, a dunking booth, face painting
    -Ft. Jackson displays (tanks, helicopters), law enforcement displays
    -Hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, sno-cones

    Award:  "Grand Champion" to the team with the shortest tug time.

    Costs and Sponsorship Opportunities:

    Captains Team - Competing in the Tug-A-Plane (Businesses with 100 or more employees) - $1,000 Entry Fee
    -Small Businesses (less than 100 employees)/Civic Organizations/Non-profit Organizations - Competing in the Tug-A-Plane - $500 Entry Fee
    -Organization Sponsorship Sign - please include business card with check - $150 Fee (Business card enlarged and displayed on stage during the event.)
    -Extra Tug (Best time counted for ranking) - $250 Fee
    -I would like to place my company’s logo on the back of the t-shirt - $500 Fee
    -I would like a table/vendor spot for my business or organization - $150 Fee
    -I am Interested in purchasing Food Vouchers in advance ($1 for drinks, $2 for food)
    -I am interested in purchasing UPS Tug-A-Plane t-shirts at a discounted fee prior to the event ($5 per shirt prior to event)

  • Cocktails & Conversations

    Cocktails and Conversations is a unique opportunity for members of the Young Leaders Society to meet, mingle and have substantive discussion with Tocqueville donors. This event is exclusively for members of the Young Leaders Society and the Tocqueville Society. Secretary of Commerce Joe E. Taylor Jr. will make remarks on economic trends in the Midlands and growth in South Carolina.

  • Spring 2008 Community Assembly

    Helping families become financially stable and independent is one goal of United Way of the Midlands.  Keynote speaker Elizabeth Kneebone, a Research Analyst at the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program, will discuss strategies to encourage savings and asset building such as Individual Development Accounts, savings bonds, financial literacy, and split refund options.

    Ms. Kneebone's work focuses primarily on metropolitan demographics, tax policies for low-income workers, and the relationships between poverty and neighborhoods. Elizabeth has authored publications on the Earned Income Tax Credit and related tax benefits for low-income workers, including “A Local Ladder for Low-Income Workers: Recent Trends in the Earned Income Tax Credit.” She has also co-authored other Brookings publications, including “Two Steps Back: City and Suburban Poverty Trends 1999-2005.”  Prior to joining Brookings, Elizabeth worked as a Research Project Manager for the Illinois Facilities Fund, where her research included assessments of the need for quality public schools in Chicago's neighborhoods and the need for subsidized early childhood care and education programs throughout Illinois' counties and major municipalities. She received a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from Indiana University.

    • Tax Credits and Asset Building for Working People

    Ms. Kneebone will discuss poverty trends and changes in poverty overtime, tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) related to poverty and wages, impact of refund anticipation loans, and strategies to encourage savings and asset building such as Individual Development Accounts, savings bonds, financial literacy, and split refund options.

    • EITC in South Carolina 

    In a new report, which will be published in May, The Brookings Institution looks at three different proposals for expanding the EITC, versions of all three have been introduced as legislation at the federal level. The workshop will review demographic information on EITC in South Carolina and the study’s findings on how each EITC expansion proposal would benefit South Carolina.
