VISTA of the Month/Jan 2011
January 2011: Linda Kelly,
Midlands Reading Consortium
1. Where are you from? I've lived in the Midlands area long enough to call it home. I grew up in South Florida and then lived in California.
2. What were you doing before becoming an AmeriCorps*VISTA? Working in Public Health.
3. Why did you join AmeriCorps VISTA? I wanted to be part of a structured volunteer program recognized at state and national levels.
4. What are your duties as a VISTA? I'm a member of the Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) team. My role is to facilitate the tutoring program so that students become proficient readers.
5. What are your goals from your year of service? To assist the team in their efforts to improve the MRC program and assure sustainability in the years to come.
6. What are your plans after your year of service? I would like to spend a few months traveling in the western states of the US.
7. Any special accomplishments? Learning how easy and rewarding it is to motivate and encourage young students to improve their English and language arts skills.
Linda is currently serving as an AmeriCorps*VISTA at Midlands Reading Consortium, housed at United Way of the Midlands.
