Midlands Reading Consortium

Helping students succeed with MRC

Test scores indicate that 45.6% of South Carolina’s children are not reading proficiently by third grade, a strong predictor of academic success. Last year, 433 students improved their skills thanks to dedicated tutors provided through programs supported by United Way of the Midlands.

One of those programs is the Midlands Reading Consortium, which is a partnership between Richland County School District 1 and United Way of the Midlands that aims to assist selected kindergarten, first and second grade students read on grade level. Volunteer tutors read with students for 30 minutes a week and mentor the same student throughout the year.
