Humanitarian of the Year

Cathy B. Novinger

Cathy B. Novinger was recognized as United Way of the Midlands 2010 Humanitarian of the Year on February 24, 2011.
Cathy B. Novinger currently serves as the Executive Director of Palmetto AgriBusiness Council and President and CEO of Novinger QTR, Inc, located in West Columbia.  She is also the owner of Vista on the West Antiques & Gifts.

Mrs. Novinger retired as Senior Vice President of SCANA Corporation in 1999, where she served as vice president of Administration and Governmental and Public Affairs.  Her career spanned almost three decades. She first joined the company as a file clerk and rose to vice president at the age of 32. 

As chair of the Midlands Housing Alliance, Mrs. Novinger moved the issue of homelessness to the forefront of public discussion and then action, raising nearly $12 million to build the homeless transition center now under construction.  She is passionate about the issue of ovarian cancer and served as the Founding Chair of the SC Ovarian Cancer Foundation-Riverbanks Region. A small sample of  posts or boards on which she serves or has served include: Immediate Past Chair Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Lexington Medical Center Foundation, SC State Chamber Executive Committee; Chair & Board Member, South Carolina State Board for Technical & Comprehensive Education; USC School of Medicine Partnership Board; and The River Alliance Executive Committee.

Mrs. Novinger’s honors and awards include:  2010 Ag Advocate of the Year, West Metro Chamber Lifetime Achievement Award, 2006 Ambassador of the Year Columbia; The Order of the Palmetto from Governor James Hodges in 1999; YWCA Tribute to Women in Industry; and Columbia Metropolitan magazine’s Five Women of the Decade.

On the National level, Mrs. Novinger served on the White House Council on Rural America; Chair, Southern States Energy Board Utility Advisory Council; the United States Business & Industry Council Board of Trustees, Junior Achievement National Liaison and the Edison Electric Institute Communications Executive Advisory Committee.

Mrs. Novinger is a native of Portsmouth Ohio, but has made her home in South Carolina.  She is married to Robert L. Novinger and they have one son, Dr. Travis Novinger, daughter-in-law Laurie and two grandchildren—Taylor and Abbey.
