The United Way of the Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) was formed to increase the number of children reading at grade level at the start of fourth grade.
In 2021, MRC expanded the program to include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) because like literacy, students are not meeting science and math milestones. Our STEM focus places an emphasis on curating curiosity, increasing a love and awareness of STEM opportunities, and increasing student confidence in these subjects.

The Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) empowers students through literacy and STEM learning experiences that build confidence, curiosity, and academic success. By connecting students with caring volunteers, engaging reading support, and hands-on STEM activities, MRC helps young learners develop the skills they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
Through strong partnerships with schools, volunteers, and community organizations, MRC is inspiring a lifelong love of learning and creating brighter futures for students across the Midlands.
