Create Generational Change

United Way of the Midlands serves a vital role in the community. They bring together businesses, volunteers, government services and other nonprofits to address large-scale issues as well as emergencies.

Create generational change and guarantee good with a donation to United Way of the Midlands. Help us meet immediate needs, break cycles of crisis, and empower people to build their own paths to success.

Helping Those Most in Need

  1. Helping Children Read

United Way's Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) is a tutoring program that helps pre-K to 2nd-grade students improve their reading proficiency. Last year's volunteers tutored 821 kids in 17 different schools. This school year, we're introducing a NEW STEM component.

A strong foundation of reading greatly impacts a child’s success in school and beyond. We've offered a library of literacy services including one-to-one tutoring, book donations, book nooks, parent engagement events, guest reading opportunities for individuals and companies and summer reading camps.

  2. Creating Affordable Housing

To date, we have invested $3 million in affordable housing initiatives leveraging more than $68 million in total project costs. This represents over 375 housing units, and we seek to raise an additional $5 million from local philanthropists to leverage more funding to create a total of 1,000 units across a range of housing types. Together, we can do more and change neighborhoods for good.

A thriving workforce needs a range of available, attainable housing. Our philosophy means innovative housing initiatives that not only fill critical gaps but also change the conversation about affordable housing. United Way of the Midlands can’t solve our housing crisis alone. To start the process, we must invest in our community’s capacity to create housing that is new and innovative, targeted to the people most in need, including workforce housing for young adults and families and single-room housing for low-income, single adults.

  3. Providing Healthcare

United Way started offering dental and vision care to those in need in 2016. The result? Five times as many people are being served and a 50 percent reduction in emergency room dental visits.

A few years ago, United Way of the Midlands was serving hundreds of people over the course of one weekend, once a year at SC Mission. With the help of our partners, we've recognized that the smart way to address access to critical dental and vision care was to band together and provide services five days a week.
