United Way of the Midlands kicks off 2019-2020 campaign season at Segra Park

Columbia, S.C. (August 29, 2019) – United Way of the Midlands kicks off its 2019-2020 fundraising campaign at United Way Day on Thursday, September 5 at 4:00 p.m. at Segra Park.

“United Way Day is a celebration of community and the impact that we can make when we Live United. We are excited to recognize the incredible work of our donors and partners who invest in improving lives within our community and have a great time with family and friends,” said Sara Fawcett, United Way of the Midlands President and CEO.

The tailgate-themed event is open to the public, and families and children are encouraged to attend. United Way Day will have food and drinks, the drumline from Benedict College, Fireflies mascot Mason, and games like Giant Jenga, Giant Connect Four and cornhole. United Way will recognize the hard work of the Pacesetters, who are companies that commit to run their campaigns early and increase giving by at least 10% from the prior year.

This year’s campaign co-chairs are Dr. Roslyn Artis, President of Benedict College, and Kevin Lindler, Senior Vice President at First Citizens Bank.

“With all the teamwork that goes into raising the funds that support the needs of more than 32,000 Midlands residents each year, this is a fitting opportunity to thank everyone who pitches in to make the Midlands a better place to live for us all,” said Lindler.

Guests will also have the opportunity to learn more about United Way and its Community Impact Partners. These local agencies will help guests gain a better understanding of the services they provide for the community and learn about ways to get involved through volunteer opportunities.

More than 30,000 community donors allowed United Way to invest $3.7 million in grants and initiatives this year to fight to improve the health, education and economic mobility of everyone in the Midlands. These grants are in addition to $2.3 million in donor-directed funds that will be distributed in the coming year.
